UPDATE: LARIMER COUNTY RADIO TOWER INSTALLED ON SOUTH BALD MOUNTAIN IN DESIGNATED ROADLESS AREA

Red Feather Lakes, CO. - As of September 30, a Larimer County contractor was installing a radio transmitter on the summit of South Bald Mountain. The tundra summit of South Bald Mountain is the highest point in the Laramie Mountains and lies within the boundaries of the Green Ridge - East Roadless Area.

Equipment documented on the summit of South Bald on September 30 included an OHV, generator, and radio equipment similar to that at the Middle Bald site.

According to the most recent information from the county, a permanent radio facility at this wilderness location would include a road, buried or above-ground power line, tower, out-building, and diesel generator with storage tank. Total construction cost would be at least five to six million dollars.

View yesterday's Middle Bald Mountain press release for additional project details.

We strongly object to development by Larimer County on one of our few remaining roadless areas, and their continued failure to work with the community towards an effective and responsible radio solution.

Colorado's roadless areas are protected by the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, adopted by the National Forest Service in 2001. However, Governor Ritter is considering a proposal to significantly weaken roadless protection, and is accepting comments on the proposal through this Friday, October 2.
